Year 6

Welcome to Year 6, the class teacher is Mrs Whittington and the class assistant is Mrs Geoghan.  We are very excited to teach your child this year and to share many wonderful learning experiences along the way.

Our Provision

Guided Reading;  During the year we will be reading a variety of genres. These books will enhance and progress your child’s reading experiences and skills.  The books we will be reading are Boy at the Back of the Class, Horrible Histories Kings and Queens, Goodnight Mr Tom, Midnight Fox, Floodlands and The Nowhere Emporium.

 

In English this year we will be learning about the English language and identifying the language features and skills needed to create and produce writing genres such as: poetry, narratives, persuasive, reports, newspapers, diary and non-chronological reports.

 

In Maths this year we will be recapping and progressing the key concepts to ensure that children have the best possible chance of achieving their best in SATs.  We follow the mastery approach using pictorial and concrete methods to embed skills and knowledge needed to progress. Each day the children will partake in skills such as fluency, recalling, application which will aid in their progress to independently complete tasks.

 

Science

Autumn 1 – Light

This half term we will recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines .

  • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye
  • explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes
  • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them

Autumn 2: Animals including humans:  Animals, including humans

  • identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will be dissecting a lamb’s heart to
  • recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle has on the way their bodies function
  • describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans

Spring 1:  Evolution and Inheritance

* recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago

  • recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents
  • identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

Spring 2:  Electricity

*  identify and name the basic parts of a simple electric series circuit? (cells, wires,

bulbs, switches, buzzers)

* compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers, the on/off position of switches?

* Recognise symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram?

Summer 1: Living things and their habitats

* describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences including microorganisms, plants and animals?

* give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics?

 

History

Autumn 1:  Kings and Queens of England.  During this half term we will be learning about the lives of past kings and queens.  We look at the legacy they have left and what influence they had over of the world and within England.  We will also investigate and research a past king or queen of our choice and look at the impact they had over the country and the world.  We will produce a power point presentation and present our findings in front of the class.

Spring 1: World War II.  During this half term we will be learning about what instigated World War II and who was involved.  We will look at the what Germany was like then compared to now,  we will explore how Hitler came to power and how he became the leader of Germany, we will explain how Europe was ruled prior to the start of the second world war and how Hitler expanded Germany, to understand and know how the second World War began, to explore and explain what was the impact of the second world War on the West Midlands region, to explore and explain how Britain defended itself during World War II and to use sources to explore which major victories led to Britain winning the war.

Summer 1:  The Windrush Generation.  During this half term we will be learning about what the Windrush Generation is.  We will be exploring where are the Caribbean islands and what is their history, to explore how did the people of the Caribbean help Britain in World War 2, to explore why did migrate from the Caribbean to England in 1948? To explore what life in London was like for the Windrush pioneers? To research who was Sam King and what did he do and who was Norma Best and what did she do? To investigate how the Windrush migration changed Britain for the Better.

 

Geography

Autumn 2:  Comparison of a region in the UK, Europe and North America

During this topic we will look at place and space, scale and connection, physical and human geography, environment and sustainability and culture and diversity.  We will understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical  geography of a region of the United Kingdom, a region in a European country, and a region  within North or South America.

Spring 2: Earthquakes, Mountains, Volcanos and Tsunami’s 1/2

We will describe and understand key aspects of: physical geography, including: earthquakes, human and physical Geography, geographical skills and field works. What are the similarities and differences between places that have active earthquake zones? What do you notice about the locations and physical features of the places that have fault lines, mountains, earthquakes or volcanoes?  What’s the difference in the scale of eruptions, between a fissure volcano and stratovolcano? What’s the process of volcanic eruption?  Why can’t human features withstand the force of volcanic eruption? What impact do earthquakes, mountain formation and volcanoes have on the environment?  How is the landscape forged and shaped by physical processes? Why do people live in the shadow of volcanoes?  How do earthquakes affect the way people live their everyday lives?  Why do mountains attract people to live near or visit them?

Summer 2: Geography – Earthquakes, Mountains, Volcanos and Tsunami’s 2/2

We will describe and understand key aspects of: physical geography, including: earthquakes, human and physical geography, geographical skills and field works. To explore volcanic eruptions on land and in water. To explore what a Tsunami is and how they are formed. To research and explore the environmental and human impact of a past earthquake. To research and explore the environmental and human impact of a Volcano past eruption. To research and explore the environmental and human impact of a past Tsunami. To research what future events may take place form evidence for wither an earthquake or volcano eruption.

 

Physical Education:  In PE this year we will concentrate on agility, balance and co-ordination to enhance physical and thinking skills in game situations.  We will be learning about OAA, gymnastics, athletics, football, hockey, cricket and rounders.  We will look at problem solving skills and communication skills to progress social and emotional thinking.

PSHE:  This year we will be learning about the world around us and how we can have a positive impact in our communities.  We will research charities and fundraising initiatives and also recognise our own emotional needs and language.

RE:  This year we will be learning about the different religions around the world and their festivals and holy days.  We will look at the core values of religion and how they can help to guide people in their daily routines, lives and decision making.

French:  This year we will be learning about the French language and in particular covering various topics such as: French transport, French houses, French musical celebrations, French verbs, how to communicate in French around a French town and French sports and the Olympics.

Computing:  In computing this year we will be covering topics such as: The history of computers (Bletchley Park), computing systems (AI), programming (Python), data handling, and showcasing and inventing a product.
